1.2" barrel dia

I have inherited this lovely old eyepiece, all brass etc.

The thing that puzzles me is barrel dia, being 1.2" exactly.

Tried googling it and searching here on SGL, but nothing so far.

Anybody knows anything about 1.2" - who and where would use it?
