Hi,

I have used video at many of the  public displays (day & night) I have conducted at major events over many years, also at open nights at UTAS Mt Canopus observatory, home of the 1.04 m telescope since 1998, both on their Mt Palomar mounted 16" as well as the one metre. I have used both TV monitors (broadcast quality) with several linked around a room, but the better option has been with one of my Mallincam colour video cameras and a video projector onto a large screen. My shows are very well received because people are using both eyes, the images are in focus, unlike looking through a telescope with one eye often focused for an older or younger eye! I can also transmit real time video to a large lecture room when using telescopes outdoors, which is handy on cold winter nights.

Hello Shevill,

A warm welcome to SGL and of course to our little corner of it.  I have read briefly your profile and I must say it will be fantastic to have someone of your experience contributing here though, please be prepared for lot's of questions!

Best regards

Karl

Good stuff Davey, yeah Chris as well. If you join CSOG you'll get access to the observing sessions section which can keep you up to date with events, i can let you know on here as well. So it will either be next Fri/Sat/Sun night for Mugdock park, obviously which ever night looks like the best weather wise.

Steve - Any idea what night this will happen? Just found out I need to work either Friday/Sat 10pm - 8am or Sat/Sunday 10pm - 6am! Im not happy about it to say the least!

I can choose either night but will prob need to let them know soonish what i want to do.

Or is it just a case of waiting till the night and see if we get good weather?

Cheers

Chris

Hi Chris,

If I was a betting man looking at the forecast this afternoon Fri looks like the least likely night. As Davy said we should have a better idea tomorrow, basically the later you make the decision the more accurate the forecast is. We usually leave it until the the actual day to make the final call. I'll update you both tomorrow and we can see from there. :)

Davy I hope your good lady is feeling better, do you work nights? Definitely no session tonight due to the weather, forecast wise slight improvement tomorrow and worse Sunday. So I'd say it's 50/50 at best whether we manage to get any observing in at all. I'll update tomorrow afternoon guys and we can see from there. :)

Hi Chris and Davy sorry for the delay in replying we were hoping there may have been an improvement in the forecast. Unfortunately we are calling tonight's session off I'll let you know the next time there's anything organised there. :)

Damn Scottish weather! I could have been out enjoying the night sky….but noooo I ended up going to the casino with a couple of mates and losing the equivalent of an ethos! :(

Keep us updated Steve. I really do want to see what kind of difference dark skies make compared to my horribly light polluted garden!

Cheers

Chris

Good to know Peter I'm looking forward to this. Out of interest would it be possible to hook up to power and one of your TVs? I have only ever set up from my garden and do not currently have a decent monitor! I can bring the projector and screen if needed or I could connect to that and a TV as the camera has both S Video and Composite.

Regards

Karl

Still hoping to go over for this, weather permitting. I popped up to see my brother, Neil, in Bolton yesterday and as we had the evening free decided to do a test run across to the astro centre and spend an hour. The forecast looked as thought it might clear latter in the evening. We found the site no prob's and parked up by the main dome as it was not too busy.Once signed in we had an interesting conversation about the latest developments in amateur radio astronomy before being shown round the site by Peter. If you are thinking of going I would advise you try and get there before dark and set up, there are paths but the site is built on a hill so there are gradients.

Just like to thank Peter and the gang for their time last night and say we had a really enjoyable visit.

I had to Google what the Astronomy Centre was

Looks like a great place!

Similar to what we are trying to set up here on my property.
