But it could not immediate show the pictures that you have taken on a big screen for evaluation? It could be good for measure FWHM value for focus and also for framing to the the right position of the sky to do your expected photo. The built in LCD screen would do some of it but not a screen stretch and some quick post processing. But you do not need a computer in the field with your excellent solution that's one really good point!

To evaluate shots, I have a regular USB link to the Nikon's image folder, and I just grab them from there. It's not the most elegant solution but it works. Lots of trial-and-error. The D3000 has no live view, so I can't even use the video link for framing. The bottom line is that I need a better camera, and that's going to have to wait before it becomes a priority item on the endless shopping list!

I could agree, sell your D3000 and buy a used D5100 or a more preferable D7000 that is also supported by Maxim DL, when the camera is working in Maxim, it is a little step to do autofocus with a V-curve if you can run your focus motor with ASCOM drivers. I just modified this stock focuser to be motorized, it works very well!

I haven't read this thread before but got interested as I will be one CCD short in a while when my second remote rig comes into life. I never realised that my MaximDL supports my D3s and have therefore bought a cable from Shoestring ($16). I will make a serial device thing that MaximDL can control and post my findings here. Cable should be here within a week and I'll try to fit it in asap.

I found this thread on dpreview which covers what star eating was and where its at now. It appears to be the algorithm used by Nikon for detecting hot pixels.

I have a D7000 which is not compatible with the cheap WiFi transmitter/receiver dongle attachment thing.

Good news is for those with the same camera that you can either use the in-built interval timer with mirror up or plug in and use Backyard Nikon or Nikon Camera Control Pro.

Just to add there is a WiFi transmitter compatible with this but it's not the cheap one that fits newer Nikons, I think it costs several hundred pounds.
