Hi there also, sorry for double post. I'll be doing the cosmology course this year - that's my first dip of the toe and really looking forward to it. If it goes well I might do the astronomy next year - it'll be interesting to hear how we all get on if this thread continues. Good luck all,

Niels

Hey Rae... Finally received my conditional letter of offer.. sent off my payment tonight along with all the requirements... waiting on a reply for the unconditional letter over the next few days... already got the books...looking at possibly getting the Experimental Methods book as well by Les Kirkup...From what I read on the Facebook page from previous people that did the course, its meant to help with helping to present information for assignments...

Keep us posted on how the Cosmology course goes, I expect some of us will be looking at that one next year.

Has everyone else already paid? I thought one of the options was to be invoiced once the term has started and I went with that?

International Students unfortunately have to pay all up front ...  There are no options for pay as you go, or funding etc.. unless your work funds it all...

I see. Thanks for the heads up on the Experimental Methods book, I'll look into that.

I haven't even been asked for payment yet... Haven't even been asked how/when I want to pay. Checked my enrolment details and it still says that I owe no money! Figured that they would send me a letter or an email once they want my fees!

Does anyone know when we should expect the course material? I was under the impression (from others who attended last year) that they post out a cd with all the material on it, then we can print etc if necessary.

I think I will purchase that book - thanks for the heads up anthtone!

Hi Rae,

You will likely be given access to course materials around the 2nd week of October. All course materials are provides in PDF format from the elearn website and are not available by CD as far as I'm aware.

I would definitely chase the state of your enrolment so you're not disappointed or given late access to elearn and the materials

Sorry all take 2.  The Maths Pack is what they have online already.. I meant is there any other maths PDF available apart from the one online??

I found some of the stuff provided by the OU useful when I did the Coursera course last year. It is here http://www2.open.ac.uk/students/skillsforstudy/if-you-get-stuck-with-maths.php

Definitely showing as enrolled on the course, but still no info on there re fees.  I also haven't yet received my id card, and I send it off a while ago.

Will be chasing them tomorrow just to make sure all is ok!

Been checking emails and Blackboard regularly just to make sure I don't miss anything!

Hi All,

I contacted the admin team, who confirmed I am on their system and fully enrolled, so I asked them about fees.  According the the finance/fee payment admin team, the fees haven't actually been generated yet, but will be within the next 3 weeks (which is why no fees are showing in the myUCLAN section).

I have paid anyway, and received a receipt, which I was asked to forward back to the admin team within the school.  For info, the email address is ucastro@uclan.ac.uk.

I was also advised that the course starts on the 16th October, and we should receive an email from them shortly before that telling us that course notes are on Blackboard.

HTH!

Hi Rae

Just received my network details today and was able to Citrix in.  Yup fees are still outstanding here too.  I'm sure I will see the unconditional letter as well soon via email.

Meanwhile snooped around the apps up on Citrix and ensure everything else is in order.  Can't submit my acceptance of the University Agreement until they have fixed the issue with the Fees, which will be done soon.

Has anybody done any of the courses prior at UCLAN via distance learning?

If so, are you able to tell us all what we might be expecting? i.e. during orientation week, group session for distance learners since students at the uni will have their session with the teachers in lecture halls, lectures in general are they just online or is there like a virtual classroom online as well??

Also, just went onto the blackboard learn site and had a look at the search reading lists found on the left side menu.  Here is the link for the UG Cert in Astronomy http://readinglists.central-lancashire.ac.uk/lists/ABFCF832-4DD1-59A5-66EB-4B796DFB046E.html

There are 3 or 4 scheduled online classrooms (text-based) for each module but the chatrooms are always open for students to organise their own sessions if desired. The class forum is where most of the interaction takes place. There are also some facebook groups where a lot of the students socialise and sometimes talk about aspects of the course.

As for the reading list - Universe is a very helpful and Norton is great too (even if for your own observational astronomy). The others aren't really essential

Hi Folks

I'm signed up to start the course this autumn - got the enrolment sorted and all the email and Citrix stuff set up and on the Facebook group as well.

Rae: What's the Blackboard feature you mentioned - I haven't come across that yet.

Welcome on board John. You will find the eLearn Blackboard through the students portal.  Mine currently says that I am enrolled on no courses, but I spoke to UCLAN today and they said this will be populated when they release the course material on 16th.  October.
