Star Control - Masks ?

Hi

Sure the answer here but I cant find it, I have some captures of the Veil Nebula, so the central star is quite bright before I start any Levels and Curves but by the time I have finished its overwhelming, sure this can be controlled using a Mask ?, are there any You Tube demos which show how to do this /
