first WF with a lens

cloud has stopped play, i was testing a new lens 18-50mm sigma on my canon 450d. i really want a good MW shot. i tried the lens at f4.5 but the stars were rubbish so i stopped it down to f6.3 but this was too slow i managed 300 sec sub iso 400 and it was still showing underexposed in BYE so by the time i realized and set it to f5.3 the cloud crept in. this was shot at 28mm. all i manged 20 min no flats no darks and a bunch of mixed subs. next time i hope i will do a bit better. also there seems to be a lot of red noise in the image. you can just make out the NAN. any tips on imaging WF with a lens would be great
