Why should Bk7 be better or worse the FPL-53.

You select a glass on the properties that you want, so the one that best fits the required properties is the best, at that time.

You cannot make a good refractor out of FPL-53, you can make a good refractor out of FPL-53 and a matched crown element. Does that make the FPL element bad or good ?

As to manufacturers Ohara are the Japanese main supplier but there are Russian and American makers of glass. The Russian lens produced by LZOS using Russian glass are every bit as good as those using FPL-53 fro Ohara. No idea who bought Schott.

Google Glass Manufacturers as a start, look up the various scopes and see what they are constructed from then search out that glass, that will tell you who made it. Search engines have a purpose.
