What is this!

Ok I know this rainbow on a sunny day is caused by water in the atmosphere, but WHY is it upside down in relation to the sun? I would expect its shape to follow the contour of the sun beneath it. What's happening here? I would point out that this is not a glare on the camera lens, it's a picture of something I can actually see in the sky right now.

Ah great! I've never seen one before, nor even knew anything about them to even look for one so its really nice to both see something new and learn something new. Does this class as serendipity? Now all I'm worried about is that dust I've clearly got in my camera!
