Y Masks??

There are people on the site who know all the maths of these masks, but I have never bothered with that. The one I have for my camera lens was made with a ring of cardboard round the lens, then just three thin strips of card stuck round the edge and meeting in the middle - a bit of a lump, but it still works well.

Experimentation is the order of the day as you will gather from DP`s post. Try some thin wire first, just twisted together, doesn`t matter what colour, but work up in thickness from there, you can finish your mask in black when you have found the the right width that gives you a decent diffraction pattern. At some stage you should have some success, even our American cousins have gone to the lengths of making very small Bahtinov`s for camera lenses. A Y mask should, therefore, work just as well, with slightly more light throughput :)
