American Nebula with unmodified DSLR

Hey everyone,

Possibly a stupid question, but is that a viable target with an unmodified DSLR? Planning out tonight's imaging and didn't know if it was plausible or not..

You most certainly can. It will take longer exposures as well as more of them. But go for it.

This is about 1.5hours of unguided 2min subs taken back in 2011 (not the best of pictures, I admit) - Canon 1000D and ED80 refractor (probably - my notes then were as bad as my pictures!). Your 1100D will make a much better job of it!

Mind me asking what ISO you imaged at? 1600?

Almost certainly ISO 800 - Thats what I always use and I'm 99.9% certain this would have been. However you may get away with 1600 on the 1100D as the camera produces less noise than the 1000D that I use.
