Not much by way of update, but some further information covered in the local IW County Press today:

http://www.iwcp.co.u...kies-49598.aspx

And the comment by one "Lee Majors" is indicative of what the VAS, CfDS, IDA, etc, are all up against. Has he never heard of a torch? Car headlights? Not to mention taking care and being responsible for one's own actions? That said, I do think more needs to be made of the fact that no-one wants to turn off all the lighting but we do want it shining where it is needed and not where it isn't.

I was very tempted to comment on this very matter on the IWCP website, but resisted the temptation on this occassion - though VAS will need to stress that this is about the appropriate/sensitive use of lighting, focused where it is needed and on the wider environmental and possible economic benefits. A difficult balance sometimes as the world seems often the most ignorant are also the most opinionated and vocal ;)

Hi All and thanks for the encouraging comments.

We are working hard on our Dark Sky Application and have started darkwightskies.com to help us publicise things.

Latest News - Seems we may have some help on the way with some additional SQMs both fixed and hand-held but please keep an eye on the new site for the latest info.

Regards

Brian Curd

A little update for you all.

We are well on the way to establishing a bunch of fixed SQM meters (maybe 10) across the Island which will help us with our mapping project (needed to convince the IDA).

Progress is mapped here where you can see the latest reading and hop to a map which shows the bigger picture.

The Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) are helping us with the project and it looks like they'll fund our efforts as they are very keen to use our data to help with other projects.

The fixed stations are in addition to a mobile SQM, attached to a car which, along with a GPS dongle and a Raspberry Pi, collects data as it goes. There will also be more of these mobiles in the near future.

There's still a long way to go with the project but we are still keen ;)

Thanks to all those helping with this, particularly the Isle of Wight AONB, Chris Wood and Mark Williams.
