PanSTARRS near NGC 7822

Last night I imaged PanSTARRS for the first time, having seen it with the naked eye about 6 weeks ago (at SGL8). The hint of the adjacent NGC 7822 is just a bonus really!

A great capture Lewis and well worth the wait to image it. I saw it too at SGL8 but have been unlucky with getting a close up as my house or my neighbours was in the way

I must admit, it was pure fluke that it was near this nebula on the night I decided to image it. It's interesting to think about how they appear roughly the same scale but one is more than 100 million times further away! The difference was even more extreme, of course, when it passed by M31 recently!

Again, a great image. Lewis, how did you stack the image? I've tried the 'stack on comet and stars' option in DSS, but that's never worked for me and results in the comet having a trail behind it and a streaky background. I either have to go for 'stack on the stars' or 'stack on comet'.

Hi Luke, yeah I found the same, so I did two separate stacks and combined the two in photoshop. The stars in the comet stack had pretty much vanished (sigma clip) so it was fairly easy to combine with the stars stack.

It was unguided; and I found the comet motion was only just visible at 100% with 2min exposure.
