As far as I can tell, this theory is still plagued by the off-by-120-orders-of-magnitude disease of the standard model. The E8 group has been popping up here and there for some time now. Some people have based their entire careers on being able to compute things with E8, not giving a damn whether their calculations could ever have anything to do with the real world.

Don't worry, it's something that physics undergraduates may come across on their final year. The wikipedia entry is as good a starting point as any:
