Determining the energy output of a GRB

Well the apparent luminosity is just the number of photons you capture per time. The energy you get from the individual energy spread of the photons.

So you might get a spectrum like this

Gamma ray telescopes don't have a great resolution, as its very hard to bring them to a focus, so need special "mirrors" which aren't really mirrors but more like pipes.
