Norwich get together

Hoping to join the Norwich Astronomical Society, but is there anyone in Norwich who knows of any dark skies in the near area and who would like to arrange a get together.

Hi Richard

My wife and I recently joined Breckland Astronomical Society at Gt Ellingham. They have a relatively dark site for their observatory and hold regular events and talks throughout the year.

Dark sky depends on where you are in Norwich. If you are North head further north. On the Western side you need to go North or South as you have to compete with the lights and towns of the A11 corridor - there are areas where it's reasonably good (bury yourself in Thetford Forest for instance) but even that's not great any more. On the Eastern side things aren't too bad as long as you avoid the towns. Heading South you get to Seething Observatory (Norwich Astronomical Society's site) which is probably as good as it gets in the Norwich area but even there you still get some glow in the western sky from Norwich.

Although it's now quite out of date, to see what you're competing with look at the pdf here http://www.cpre.org.uk/resources/countryside/dark-skies/item/download/490

For properly dark skies head to Kelling Heath this weekend for the Star Party ...
