rwilkey
Hi Jimmy, M42 - the Orion Nebula is one, as are many galaxies (M31 Andromeda, the most popular amongst new astronomers) and anything beyond our solar system such as double stars, globular and open clusters etc. Deep Sky Objects are classified in many ways and one of the most common observing lists is the Messier Catalogue (any object from the Messier catalogue has an 'M' in front of it) Read more about it and DSO's here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messier_object Things like double stars are classified separately (by a chap called Struve). There is also the NGC (New General Catalogue), more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_General_Catalogue
