New Scope smell

Is it just my imagination, the coatings on the optics, or does a new scope have the same effect as a new car?!!! My scope is a already 6 months old but I still get a waft of fresh optics every time I remove the cover from the OTA!

Lol - I like the plastic smell on freshly opened dvds....kinda similar?

It's not your imagination. My 250PX is a little over 18 months old and you still get the same smell when you pop the dust-cap off

(I think it might just be the paint SW use on the inside of their Newt OTA's so we best keep it to ourselves or people with...other scopes may think us a bit weird )

Just had the strangest urge to go and remove the dust cap and have a good sniff... and by gosh you're right! What multi-sensory wonders telescopes are these days.

If I recall my days in the 80s, I seem to recall almost anything Russian had a quite distinct smell. I assume TALs still do.

To all those who enjoy the smell of new scopes, make sure the neighbors do not catch you “sniffing” the back of your mirror cell; otherwise, you have a lot of explanation to do

I know what you mean. My 6" newt has a very particular, but nice smell to it. I found that when I received my TAL 100RS, even though second hand, it seems to smell of mothballs - not so nice.

Ok this has got to stop! I just went and pulled the dust cap off of my OTA....and it does smell "brand new!"

don't forget a couple of extra coats on the mirrors - very important to get a smooth finish.
