Coin an Astronomical Collective Noun

Recommended Posts

The fun thing about collective nouns is you can pretty much make them up out of whole cloth, judging from established ones such as 'a chattering of choughs' or the famous 'crash of rhinoceros'. There is a long tradition of this - the 1486 Book of St Albans lists such gems as 'a Doctryne of doctoris', 'a Sentence of Juges', 'a Melody of harpers', and 'a Gagle of women', pre-dating both spelling and political correctness. I was wondering if we could concoct an appropriate list of astronomical terms. A few suggestions:

'A fusion of stars.'

'An insufficiency of aperture.'

'A canal of indistinct-planetary-features.'

'An orbit of satellites.'

And finally: 'A disappointment of cloud.' (Other suggestions for this may be less polite.)

Can anyone think of more?

An Insolvency of Imagers

Or maybe a stack?

Edwina: Morris, what are those people doing in that shed over there at this time of night? Should we call the police?

Morris: Don’t worry Edwina, it’s ok. I do believe it’s a stack of imagers. They're perfectly harmless… mostly!
