Syntrek Handset LED Flashing Problem...

Recommended Posts

Dear Stargazers Community,

Due to a series of unfortunate circumstances, my HEQ5 was stuck in a wet/damp garage for a lengthy period. Today I was able to salvage it. Initially I had some issues getting the motors going, but I was able to do it - despite the mount being very wet - with water actually in the power port.

After a while it stopped tracking, and emitted a constant whine. I noticed the Syntrek handset was flashing - ALL keys. Nothing I pressed did anything. The LED on the actual mount was consistent. After a series of removing and reinserting the power/handset I was able to get it working again. Shortly after it failed again. This time I could not get it to work.

I brought the head inside and dismantled it to see inside. The compartment with the board in looked dry, so I removed the front port panel and checked there. A small amount of water, which I dried. I put the whole thing back together to no effect.

I left it for about 5 minutes, then retried and now it works again. I've just left it on and tracking now.

Since I don't seem to be able to find anything online about flashing LEDs on the handset, I have not been able to confirm what the problem actually is (although it does sound water damage likely).

Anyone familiar with this, heard from someone else, or just any tips about keeping it running? I'm worried it might just give up completely. It is possible to replace the board in this situation, and if so, how much do they cost?

Thanks for reading.

Let it dry in a warm and dry climate (inside a house) for a 2-3 days, or use a hairdryer to dry it.

Water causes it to short circuit... NOT good.

Never operate any electrical or electronic equipment while is wet... gets damaged or worse.. for you :)

I have decided to sell my Cem-120 mount as i got a second hand AP 1100 GTO from my friend who got a new AP 1600 with encoders
its just under a year old bought from Altair Astro so still under two year warranty is in mint cont i couldn't miss the opportunity to get
AP 1100 GTO and let it go still waiting for pier plate for mount.
So theirs no point in keeping two large mounts after i got my dream final mount buyer will pay shipping price is 2150 pounds.
Altair Astro price without Ipolar Camera is 3250 pounds without Ipolar Camera which is 200 pounds total 3450 pounds

I am going to buy Skywatcher EQ5 Pro Go-To mount. But, unfortunately, I am low on budget.
So, does someone know where can I buy the cheapest EQ5 pro mount?
Yesterday there was a low price for it (350 €), but they changed it.
      Thank you for your time!

I tested the tracer polymer battery over a six hour period and although the red light on the HEQ5 flashed most of the time, and more rapidly as time went on, the mount moved so that the time on setting circles changed by six hours, suggesting the mount will track OK.  (the test was carried out during the day).  I did not try to get the telescope to point in a different direction using the handset.
      1) Should I be bothered by the flashing lights on the HEQ5 mount?
      2) Is tracer misleading people by saying their batteries are 12 volts?  (they say that their discharge curves are flat)
I found that the battery's voltage falls.  Below is from the Tracer datasheet.
      ----------------------------------------------------------
Built-in Fuel Gauge - 5 colour LED fuel gauge mounted externally to show charge level. LED Status:

Sooo...I'm getting quote frustrated here. This spring I tested my HEQ5 with guiding. The synscan controller was connected to the computer trough the USB plug on the hand controller. This worked like a charm in my living room. On the new controllers you dont need the rs cable. But when I tried the whole thing with guide cameara for some live shooting, it just did not work. I get something wrong with the com port in decice manager, driver not working. I have tried 3 different drivers. The whole thing responded, connected and was guiding when i did a dummy test before the summer. So setup is pc-synscan via usb for pulse guiding. Can it be a problem with windows 10? What t h.... just happened? Where can I find a driver that works? And believe me it worked 5 months ago, argh. Thanks for any respons and support

      SOLD
Skywatcher HEQ5PRO Tripod and Extension pillar.
There are a few marks on the tripod legs but not really noticable, the eyepioece/spreader tray has paint flaking off
But could be cleaned and repainted, it didnt bother me, but I am lazy.
I am selling as its not getting used as it should be and I find I use the excuse that it takes to long to carry it out
and setup, but in reality I think I am just losing interest.
As it is a heavy object collection from TS25 (Hartlepool) is preferred.
But if a courier collection service is available buyer pays the costs and arranges pickup I am happy as long as money has been transfered. Also I am prepared to travel a reasonable distance to meet for exchange.
Price £400 ONO I will not split

      SALE COMPLETED
