Naked eye, it is hard to distinguish most comets from stars, but binoculars will usually reveal them to be fuzzy objects. There is a visible comet right now, even as we speak, in Perseus. It is about 2.5 magnitude, and you can find it by locating Perseus, more or less overhead in the late evening, and looking in the northwest part of the constellation. The comet is yellow and fuzzy, so be carefull not to mistake it for a tennis ball  . It is really easy to see.
