Well said...M42 is not a high magnification object. It's one where less is more.

If your eye is relaxed and not squinting or trying too hard, then a wide field view will show tendrils, lanes and the full massive extent of this most gorgeous nebula. Even just putting your hand over your open non viewing eye will boost the view,

Make sure you let your eyes adjust to the darkness for at least 20 minutes, makes a huge difference.
