DSLR Shutter - Canon 1000D

Hi,

I'm trying to set up the DSLR Shutter software to control my Canon 1000D. I've connected the 1000D to the lap top with the USB cable that came with the camera, but every time I start DSLR Shutter there is an error message about not being able to detect a USB port. I've tried all the USB ports on the lap top. All of them work as the computer can see the camera (and all the photos on the camera).

Any suggestions as to why DSLR Shutter can't connect to my 1000D?

Many thanks

Pete

Thanks. I didn't realise one needed a special cable. Any idea about the type of cable?

Not tried the free APT yet. Might just do that. Does that need a special cable too?

Pete

When I looked at the page for the software, it said:

Support for ShoeString Astronomy's DSUSB adapter (Windows and OS X)

Support for serial port triggers via the RTS data line (Window and OS X)

Support for parallel port triggers via the D0 or D1 (pin 2 or pin 3) lines (Windows)

Support for Hap Griffin's IR-based Nikon serial port adapters (Windows)

Support for Pierro-Astro's EOS long-exposure adapter

Which made me think it doesn't work over just a USB connection.

APT works with just the normal USB cable so no need to buy anything extra.

Or you could use th free Canon EOS utility software that comes with the camera? Works a treat and you can remote shoot with it and set it to take multiple timed shots. Uses the standard USB cable.

Free download from Canon here (it says updater, but it installs a full version) - http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0037078.asp?model=

This only works if shooting with a lens on the camera , if shooting through a scope you'll need APT (http://www.ideiki.com/astro/) or BYEOS (http://www.backyardeos.com/)

The DSRShutter adaptor cable is here . . . http://www.opticstar...p=0_10_5_0_5_20

Thanks for the link Steve.

Phew, wasn't expecting the DSUSB to be over 70 quid in price, plus another £6 for the cable to the DSLR. I might have to look at alternatives.

Can't recommend APT highly enough , full version only about a tenner but the basic version is free to try out .

No extra kit needed just a USB lead from the camera to the laptop , I'm running my 1000D this way with a 20m Active USB extension with no problems.

Handy this time of year to sit in the warm while imaging . . . :p

Hi Steve,

Just downloaded APT, installed on the lap top .. plugged in the 1000D with the ordinary USB lead ... and proceeded to take several photos of the rain using one of the APT plans. Just brilliant!!

I love this plug-in-and-play stuff.

Next job ... learn how to use APT and then hope for some clear evenings.

Cheers

Pete
