A short bino session

After watching the tribute to SPM last night, I felt, despite feeling bit rubbish, I ought to go and observe something... I so grabbed my 8x56 ED Bino's (can't call these bins... they're lovely) and headed out..

It was rather misty... and very cold... so not much to see up to around 30 to 40 degrees, but I was quite surprised to see the double cluster as a faint patch without using the binos.

I really just wandered around a few of the old faves... M45 as a starting point... always a lovely view, but in these Bino's... really stunning, with crisp pinpoint stars.

Orion was cresting the house... so a view of the various objects around there.. .M42 of course, and the Collinder cluster (69 I think) around the middle belt star. I also think I found the cluster at the core of the rosette neb... I can't remember what it's called...

Turning around, I had a peek at the double cluster, M31 and M33, the Mirfak association, and a general nose around Cassie. Then went hunting for M81 and M82, and I believe I found them... I certainly saw two grey blobs, albeit very tiny, in about the right location, I don't believe they were stars...

Turning back, another view of M45, a nose around the Hyades, and a peek at Jupiter... the moons were really clear, even without anything to stabilise the binos.

By this point, the mist and cold had worked it's way inside the many layers I was wearing, and I stopped my little session and went to warm up.

Binos are great aren't they? ! Just pick 'em up and go. Great as scopes are they can be a bit of a faff to get set up sometimes when you just want a quick "hit" (when missus is watching rubbish on TV especially.....) :) I like M36, 37 and 38 in binos - great objects IMO...

Absolutely right. And those messiers are three particular favs of mine too - looked stunning last night at about 1am - crystal clear!

I was out at about midnight last night with my 7 x 50s. As already said, can't beat just picking them up and stepping outside. Last night was one of the clearest nights I've seen in a while which really makes suffering the cold worth it. Saw quite a few Geminids as well.
