I have a 4" refractor that clearly shows the 4 brightest moons, up to 7 bands/belts on Jupiter plus the Great Red Spot and other features when they are visible. What you see on any particular occasion depends on the seeing conditions and how long you observe the planet for. The initial level of detail is often much lower but with time at the eyepiece you gradually discern the more subtle detail. A 6" newtonian should at least be able to match my 4" refractor I would think.
