To play devils advocate here (Sorry), but did they ask "What is the nearest Star to Earth" or What is the nearest Star to the Solar System"

If they did not specify and simply ask "What is the nearest Star" then clearly the answer is Helios (The Sun).

Either way the quiz master is a numpty!!

Had exactly the same thing happen to me in a pub quiz a few years' back.

I get very annoyed at that sort of thing...

Another quiz favourite of mine is when I include the original (comedy) Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again in answers about James Bond when the quiz master fails to qualifiy the question by saying "official Bond films" (questionable anyway) or Eon Production Bond movies...

The truth of the matter is that basic physics/science and some of the general public do not mix well at all :( .. and what ever is said to them tends to go in one ear and out the other (various reasons for that).

I blame schools (I won't go into that again), and the media (especially TV). Oh well :(

I reckon you're all being a bunch of patronising pedants. Might I draw your attention to the Collins dictionary definition of star as "any of a vast number of celestial objects that are visible in the clear night sky as points of light" and MacMillan has "a very large hot ball of gas that appears as a small bright light in the sky at night". So the quiz master was just going with the common definition of a star qua star.

Since when does a bunch of linguists get to decide astronomical issues?

Those guys probably still think Pluto is a planet (or even a dog) :D

Anyway, definition 2 in Collins states the sun is a star.

An anyway, they haven't even got an entry for slood yet
