SUGGESTED MEETING DATE - EAST ANGLIANS.

Recommended Posts

Sorry for delay chaps i've been dawdling a bit - Dave (Centroid) has encouraged me to strike whilst the iron is hot .

As I have said previously I am on call this week so can't stray too far away from my "response zone".

I apologise in advance but I knew we wouldn't get a date that all could attend. However, Sat 20th October is coming up as a potential favourite date. I suggest we meet in the afternoon just for a social (faces to names, etc) and to give people driving from further away time to get there and back at a decent time. The date is by no means set in stone so if another would be better for the majority (i.e Sun rather than a Sat) then we can go for that.

EDIT - NOW LOOKING LIKE THE SUN 21st OCT subject to venue confirmation.

Dave will investigate the venue but if this is not available I am more than happy to host you at my house. (If you don't mind the decorating mess)!!!

Please post here rather than PM so that we avoid anybody missing out on the "conversation".

Hope to hear from you all soon.

Cheers

Bill£ :D

Bill et al

The venue that I have suggested, is NOT available on Saturday Oct 20th, but IS available on Sunday Oct 22nd, Saturday Oct 27th and Sunday Oct 28th. Week evening availability is usually very good.

The venue is in a village location just to the South of Ipswich (approx 6 miles), and with easy access from the main A12 (about 1 mile).

Its is a 'brand new' village hall, with all mod-cons, and a large committee room (up to around 20 people or so). The committee room would be very suitable for social meetings, talks, and presentations etc.

The 'hall' has an open/garden area at the rear, which is South facing, and overlooking open fields. There being no street lighting in the village, it enjoys relatively dark skies, and the only small amount of sky glow, being from Ipswich, some six miles to the North. The nearest large town to the South, is Colchester, 12 miles away. East and West are also good.

Bill's thoughts are for an initial meeting during an afternoon, and on a weekend, to see, as Bill suggested earlier, if we might want to form a group, and how we would see such a 'group' evolve.

I have spoken to the people responsible for the venue, with regard to setting up and using telescopes at the rear of the hall, and there is no objection to us doing this, if we wished to do so. Power via extension leads could be made available.

I am able to hire the venue at very low cost (£10), for an afternoon or evening. This includes, heating/lighting and use of the kitchen facilities (e.g. Tea & Coffee etc), and there is a good 'village pub' less than 5 mins walk away.

Bill is the one trying very hard to 'pull' this thing together, and I am quite happy to undertake the organisation, with regard to this venue, if required, and provide Bill with any other support that he needs.

Over to you guys :D

Thanks for the comprehensive info Dave. :D

Can I please reiterate that the first meet will be close to Ipswich and that the exact location and meeting confirmation will be given via PM to interested parties.

In light of the venue not being available on Saturday shall we adopt the sooner rather than later approach and go for the Sunday 21st Oct (I assume you mean the 21st Dave)??

Cheers

Work got crazy busy all of a sudden, so I've only been checking the forums once a week or so (rather than once every 15 minutes!) but I'm pretty sure I could make 21st October with no problems.

Who's bringing the biscuits? :D

Bill is aware, but I can confirm that I have 'booked' the venue for the said date and time, and look forward to seeing all that can 'make it' there.

Being during daylight hours, it will give us a good opportunity to have look at the area to the rear of the venue, with regards to the sky vista, and its potential for telescope use, should there be a perceived future need.

I know that Bill has PM'd directions to those attending the first East Anglian Local Meet, but here's a picture of the venue, so you'll recognise it when when you see it.

Picture scanned in from a paper document, so its a bit 'grainy'.

Its obviously the front of the building (plenty of parking BTW), but the picture is taken looking South, so its a bit of the Southern Sky aspect that you can see, albeit not as from the rear of the building.
