So following on from my semi success with Vega here are spectrum's for both Altair and Deneb

Next I need to create an instrument response for my setup then I can really go for it.

Thanks for looking

John,

Nice results!

They look a bit noisey.. what exposures are you using? A few (well many!) more photons would help.

The dispersion looks OK.

Are you doing a background removal?

Onwards and upwards.

Thanks will remove background in the future, as for capture settings well im using QGVideo for the QHY5 and so adjust the Length and Gain Settings, set it to save in BMP format - is there a better way ?

how's it going gentlemen?? i was wandering if one of you's (or Both :) ) could give me some advice on a decent spectroscope, Merlin i noticed you have the Spectra-L200, i have tried to check a price for this but cant find one anywhere so im guessing it cost a pretty penny, do you know where i could get a quote for one?? any advice on any other models or advice of any kind? it really is an immensely interesting field of studdy and im pretty desperate to get started

Thanks guys :)

Shame they have such small radial velocities; means that the delta-lamda for Altair is only about 0.5 Angstroms so far too small to detect :( Would be interesting to see if anyone can pick up on some galaxies (with much larger radial velocities).

Great job though, suitably impressed :)

Shinol,

The Spectra-L200 is a Kit solution I developed for the members of the astronomical spectroscopy Y!group. Details on the group files area.

The commercial solutions for a slit spectroscope vary from Elliot's CCDSpec 600 l/mm grism instrument, through the Baader DADOS (200 and 900 l/mm) to the Shelyak LISA, LhiresIII and eShel designs.

Prices vary.

The spectroscope chosen depends on the research you have in mind.

John,

Use as many as you can!

Stacking as per your previous experience...

so i have some avi files but when i load into registax it seems to stop at setting waypoints and thenhas problems aligning ?, with moon avi files I can select points but with spectrum Im having problems ?

Hmmm

I suppose it comes down to the quality and definition of the spectral images.

There should be some signifcant features visible in the spectrum to "lock on" to?

Drop me an email with a couple of samples...let's see what we can do.

so I have figured out how to process by drawing a box round the star, now Im using QGVideo with my QHY5 but the frames seem to be 1 sec each so only 60 in a minute, I guess I need to play with the shutter speed to get more frames in a minute ?

Here's a few of mine with a Star Analyser (For slitless systems like the Star Analyser you need a concentrated active region so you can pick up the H alpha emission eg Seyfert Galaxies and Quasars are good)

At the other end of the Radial Velocity (and spectrograph sophstication) scale are exoplanets where 50m/s precision is possible with amateur equipment

My typical precision using a LHIRES III spectrograph is around 1-2km/s under good conditions

Cheers
