Milky way or smoke from the chimney.

Fabulous photos Stewart. It does look like there's a bonfire behind the cottage, but thankfully the light pollution is nowhere near that bad to the naked eye from this location - it's a great spot for enjoying the night sky and deserving of the Dark Sky Discovery Site designation.

It certainly is a great spot, luckily we're spoilt for choice up here.

Mind if i ask what settings/equipment was used? I'd love to get a milky way that bright and clear.

Canon 5DMKII and Canon 17-40mmL lens.

30 second exposure

17mm at f4

ISO 12800.

A series of levels and curves adjustments in CS4 to boost the detail and contrast.

:o

Yes,its a bit over the top but the 5DMKII handles it reasonably well and a once over with imagenomic noise reduction smooths things out not to bad.

brilliant images Stewart

Cheers mate, with any luck this time next year we'll all be snapping Comet ISON and not give the milky way a second glance.

Possible daylight comet, now woudn't that be something,or will it break up?Only time will tell.
