drift alignment, east/west drift

Recommended Posts

does the pulse signal go via the QHY5 to the mount?

correct

could underline the valus you mean on the exmple

Direction Step dx dy

RA+ (west) 1 0 -0.2

RA- (east) 36 1.1 0.1

as you can see, values in step 1 and 36 are similar and close to 0. it means that star in step 36 came back to lock position. in your case it seems that there is no "come back" signal and star just drift away.

i will try the manual direction buttons tomorrow evening, Putting the calibration step "up to 1000ms" to am i right in thinking the lower this is then the longer it will pulse for?

No, the value sets the duration of the manual pulse, it tells the mount to move at whatever the guiding rate is for this amount of time. The higher the value, the longer the pulse. It's also used for the calibration. I'm not sure why PHD thinks the calibration step succeeded, I think that's a bug.

just an idea. in case st4 ports (or cable) is broken, try to use earlier mentioned handset to laptop conection and use EQMOD for mount controling and guide signal sending. In my case it has solved all PHD and guideing issues. EQMOD is briliant pice of software. I have never looked back.

tried the manual guide tonight just using the st4 cable and the qhy5 usb cable. the mount definitely responds to north/south commands, i can hear it "pulse" when commanded to.however there appears to be no movement when commanding it to go east/west.

Perhaps the cable is not good? Sounds like you need to go through the ASCOM guiding interface or somehow replace the cables.

i have done a continuity test and the cable is fine.if i wanted to try the eqmod route, that has been suggested what do i require or need to do?

set your handset in pc direct mode and you will be able to connect to your laptop for free (providing that you have got proper serial to RJ-11 cable ). here you can see all options:

http://eq-mod.source...rol_Options.pdf

any recommendations as to where is best to get this cable (serial to RJ-11 cable) from?

progress!!!!!!!!! installed all appropriate drivers/programmes for the EQDIR cable and i know have a mount that slews in all directions. so it looks as if the fault is on the ST4 line, not sure its the cable probably the ST4 port on the camera is my guess.

the next clear night  can i just use PHD for guiding as usual with the new cable arrangment, mount to PC via EQDIR cable and QHY5 to PC via USB cable

Firstly a MASSIVE thank you to everybody who has helped me with my guiding problems.it has been quite a steep learning curve getting to grips wth PHD and then the EQMQOD.

the ST4 cable does seem to have been the major problem intially.i was still having a few problems getting the mount to guide, but having been pointed in the right direction re calibration steps (thank you bamus!) this certainly looks a lot better now

i have now paid more attention to what the mount is actually doing via the status bar when calibrating.

it still took a couple of attempts to get a satisfactory amount of guide steps per direction and the returning steps, but once it did the guiding behaved itself for the rest of the session.

so thanks to bamus, themos, russ,
