Controlling the mount with a planetarium program, make test shots and compare them with the planetarium software.

and how someone discovered it in the first place

The VDB catalog was published by Sidney van den Bergh in 1966 and contains reflection nebulae which are visible on prints of the Palomar Sky Survey.
