RA and Dec axis

Im not sure how to work the ra and dec axis. iv just been pointing and not realy paying attention to them. am i rite in saying they are used to locate certain stars ect.

I think the answer is yes they are for locting XY or Z.. not just 'out the box' tho, only once you have the EQ mount well polar aligned. Ive yet to use the number dials. They scare me.

Btw do you have the astromaster 130EQ- MD version?

They are in theory supposed to help you locate stars if you know the co-ordinates, just try resding those small numbers in the dark though, I wouldn't bother.
