Accessorising

The most used and useful accessory I have is a broom handle. I lean on it when looking through the eyepiece and it keeps me rock-steady. Anyone else got weird and wonderful astronomy accessories?

I use an adjustable ironing chair. It has a high back so if I need to hold steady for any reason (eg strong winds) I just turn it round.

Kim (brantuck )I am rather concerned that you have 'wind' problems when observing (perhaps you need more cushions) :grin: :grin: I agree that one of the best accessories when observing is an observing chair and there have been plenty of ideas over on the equipment DIY section should you want to make your own and its not that difficult. I should add that having a good star map is also a use 'accessory' especially when you have learnt where the more obvious Messier and NGC objects are.

I used to struggle with standing steady at the EP. I like to think I am brainy, but it took me months to figure out all I had to do was keep the tripod legs retracted and sit down.

I normally stand to observe but when on holiday I used a shooting stick to perch on. Was quite comfortable and kept me steadier, might try it again next time out.
