Experimental IC1396

Sky Conditions looked good at first tonight but a hazy mist started to settle almost as soon as I started imaging and after 8 subs the light spread became too much so I had to abandon the session but I did get a chance to at least test my Canon 28 - 135mm Image Stabiliser Lens - sadly, the image stabiliser function cannot be used for astro images as it stabilises movement caused by the camera, NOT the object being photographed! I was hoping that as it is a bit of a specialised lens, Canon may perhaps have used better than average quality glass for the elements!

This image comprises of 8 subs of 300 seconds each using my SXVF-H9C CCD piggybacked on my 10" Reflector with the zoom set to 125mm. Guided and processed in MaximDL and PhotoShop. I felt it had potential for future work....

Guess the dusty bits will need more exposure time but looking very promising

It certainly needs more exposure and preferably not through mist either!! The images looks pretty 'soft' to me and I am hoping that this is the mist rather than the optics because this is a useful focal length for these larger objects and my small CCD sensor. I wasn't that happy with the tracking last night either as the stars don't look that tight to me despite the short focal length but a better night and I will try the lens again, perhaps on a more forgiving subject that this rather dim one.
