obtaining pics for stacking (help)

I understand the idea of photo stacking, but don't know how to get the pics first. I am used a dslr on a tripod..

Do you take lots of wide open short exposures at high ISO.?

Do you take lots of longer exposures for deeper space pics?

Do you have to strap the cam to a telescope and use tracking.

Can it be done without any tracking, or am I up against it.????
