Helen
.....a clear night at last and what happens? the computer in the obs decides it won't recognise anything connected to it by USB!!! what?/ why??? It was working Saturday when I tested the autofcusser - and its not as if that's a new installation as all I did was move the stepper to a different scope. No idea what's gone wrong, and I've just spent a fruitless hour and half trying to sort it out. Frustrating to say the least!I'll come back in the daylight tomorrow and give it another go, but if anyone has any suggestions I'd be grateful!Helen
John
Sorry to hear that Helen. Stories like yours are why I keep IT / electronics very separate from my "no-tech" scopes !Hope you get it all sorted soon

Astralstroll
Sounds like there have been a whole load of computer issues over the last couple of days. I spent most of Sunday getting my laptop back in running order. Not the best way to spend a day. Hopeyou get yours up and running again soon.Dave. Helen
Thanks guys. I actually haven't installed any software since it last worked. Chatting to Mike last night he said we had a power failure yesterday morning, so I don't know if that was the cause. I'm going to strip everything down today and test everything directly plugged in to the pc to see whether its the pc or the hubs (unplugging and rebooting them last night didn't work). It even affected my keyboard! (thank goodness for teamviewer!)Helen

boabsta
We,ve had this on a few laptops all running windows. For some reason windows just stopped recognising anything that got plugged into lappy. The usb ports went 1 at a time but were pretty quick in following each other until none worked.Unfortuneatley we tried quite a lot to get them going again, re-isntalling drivers, system restores, different accounts and in the end had to resort to a pint of coke and a claim. If your running windows maybe try a dual boot and install linux and see if that works. Or maybe even run it in sandbox and see what happens.I hope yours is a simple fix but windows realy isnt very reliable or user freindly when things go poop. Davey-T
Have you let Windows do any updates lately ?I did one at the weekend and it stuffed my laptop completely , cleared all my toolbar settings, all my Yahoo forums even wiped the IE9 icon off the taskbar.Did system restore and all is fine again. Also had seperate problem recently, fired up obs' and got a message on the laptop, not found camera (Atik 314) messed about for a couple of hours and gave upnext day it worked fine, never found out why just hope it doesn't do it again one nice clear night Dave
Helen
From a bit of looking in the log today there may have been some auto updates (I leave the PC on all the time). I got some things to work directly, but it still doesn't like the USB hubs at all. I gave up and came back in to watch the Olympics! I need to unplug everything tomorrow (I wimped out today as that involves going on the floor towards the corner where the spiders live!! to get at the back of the PC).Helen

Ant
I had a load of windows updates a few weeks ago that screwed up my WIN7, did a system restore and the next time the updates came down they installed without hitch. OS updates are strange like that.Ant

Ant
Which OS are you running XP, Win7 or Vista (please not Vista).Win7, click on Start Symbol. In the SEARCH PROGRAMS AND FILES box type "System restore" and hit return - follow the instructions... pick the most recent date prior to the problems.Ant

Helen
Restore appears to have sorted it all out, with a little help from the previous thread on deleting unused Com ports - I love this place (and I'll know next time to just do this rather than pull the observatory apart )Helen
