Motor drives for EQ-5 mount

I'm looking to buy a motor drive for my EQ-5 mount (not immediately, but soon!)

I've seen on FLO that there are 2, a single-axis and a dual-axis:

I'm wondering what the dual-axis is used for. Obviously the single-axis one drives the RA axis to track objects across the sky, but why would you need a motor on the dec axis too? Is that used in combination with guiding systems or goto systems or something?

Thanks!

GOTO certainly needs two motors, I would guess it is pretty important for guiding too but for regular observing the second motor is a luxury.

... it is indeed a luxury but one I am grateful I shelled out for when I motorised my EQ5!

I have/had an EQ-5 with the dual drive option, and the Dec drive was just very handy to have. It's great for centering the view in the eyepiece, using just the controller rather than a combination of the controller and fumbling in the dark for the manual control.

Unfortunately mine never really worked right, it was a second-hand setup and the driveshafts were slightly bent and the clutch on the RA never worked correctly, so I've had to scrap the lot. If or when I get a new mount for my ED80, it will have dual drives again.

hi,i bought the single Ra motor drive for my eq5 because it had dual speed on the Ra and i thought the Ra and DEC remote only had 1 speed going by there only being four buttons on it up,down and east west.i found it quicker to use manual cable on the DEC.is this the case with the dual motor.
