On May 19th 2012 Dr. Brian May was invited to open our new Connaught Dome.

He joined NLO members and all those who had donated money or materials for this building project.

It was named after Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught (third son of Queen Victoria) who had been chairman of Sir Norman Lockyer's fundraisng committee. This new observatory had originally been planned In 1914 and was intended to house Lockyer's 30" telescope. The onset of the First World War scuppered the plans shortly after the ceremonial cutting of the turf in April 1914, and so we are very pleased that Lockyer's wishes have now at last been fulfilled.
