Do i get a basic scope or a second pair of binoculars?

For looking at planets choose a slow scope (f-10 plus). For imaging dso's a faster ratio is preferred (f-5 or less). A long focal length is what you are looking want for crisp, sharp views. I'd go for a small Mak like an SW127 Mak - in fact I'm after one myself for white light solar observing lol. :)

I've got a mercury 707 - The scope is ok, the mount was pants ('was' as in it fell apart in next to no time)

I have the Mercury707 at the moment and I absolutely love it! Easy to store, easy to transport, didn't cost too much!

The mount isn't rubbish! It's an AZ2 mount so it is basic but you can do slow motion controls for the Altitude.

I would recommend it :) I have even done some astrophotography with it using a compact camera!

With a solar filter it's great for solar viewing!
