Didnt mars pass close 4 or so years back? im sure it was the closest for years at the time!

Yeah, that was the time when it appeared as large as the moon does to the naked eye

when seen through a modest, 60 power telescope.

Closest approach is the 24th of December I think, I plan to be imaging the planet around that time if I get the chance. Apparently the dust storms are clearing so I hope there's some detail to be seen in my new 8" scope, otherwise I'll be gutted.
