Lol. I can't leave this alone! Martin and Steve were right, I oversaturated the image in DSS. Instead of brightness 7 in the RAW/FITS dialogue I reduced it down to 3. My star colours returned!

Its hard to leave it alone when you think/know the data/detail is in there somewhere... you absolutely just need one more go at it... been there.... still there
