You can do a rough polar align without Polaris visible. Point the scope at a star with known declination, check the dec circle and see how far off it is, compared to the listed value. Rotate the mount one way or the other and see how much closer you are. Adjust accordingly. This is how I polar align to the Sun in daylight. Once you're close, then drift align.
