The Guardian Guide to Night Skies

Thanks Adrian - that might be really useful - my wife has talked me into taking my telescope into her school in the Autumn and giving her children a brief talk and then taking them outside to look through the scope- could be a good starter - cheers

You're mostly likely to encounter it in late autumn and early spring, and at times when the sun is active.

To be honest, i'd be pretty worried if I saw anything when the Sun is inactive, as we'd be pretty cold. And dead!
