At the risk of labouring the point, to those not in the know, and I am gutted to hear the news, but let's all beware.

This is well worth considering for businesses and homes:

SmartWater - Forensic coding for your home

I have my kit all done, office laptops, printers etc. and stickers liberally applied around the house / office. It is a proven deterrent and really works. If you sell the kit, take a note of who you sold it to and then it cane be returned to the owner if ever lifted.

This stuff has got to be so hot now. Any eBay adverts have got to be suspect. Worth checking others items for sale if any of these come up.

But how would it be listed? If the thief doesnt know what he/she's got then ity might just go up as 'telescope', 'binoculars'. Which makes it even more suspicious but will it make it harder for us to try and track down?

Free listing w/end aswell

Who know whether they knew what they were looking for or just some opportunists looking for their next drug fix. If it is the latter then they will want to move it cheaply down their local pub. Looks like it is specialist gear, so it would stick out more than if it was bog standard stuff. Might be worth having a word at all the local hostelries in Tod and also mention that the Police are on the case. The landlords would be more likely to shop the scumbags if they knew they could get their collars felt as well......

I'm guessing the thieves knew exactly what they were taking. Beggars belief, but even nice as astronomers are, there are always some people willing to risk it. This amount of kit took some carrying, where as most thefts to supply drug habits etc. usually take portable items easy to shift (laptops, iPads etc.).

Sadly, I'm inclined to agree. It seems a bit too focussed and specific (and weighty) for skag 'eads to pinch.

I've been on the receiving end of dirty skag heads robbing me to pay for their junk, it's a horrible feeling. :(

look's like a steal to order .you may see them coming up for sale month's later [maybe oct/nov time when dark skie's come around] all i can say is that these people reap what they sow and the person will get what is coming to him/her.

have you thought of informing your local newspaper/radio station? if telling people of the good work you have been doing and asking for local public help rather than just in the astronomy field, would imagine that may help as well.

Really sorry to here of this and can't believe that it is stolen to order as I have never met a bad astronomer who would sink to such depths.

I imagine that they must have used a large vehicle to remove it all as none of the equipment is small or light weight.

I will inform all at the club and ask them to be on the look out for specialised equipment.

Fingers crossed Pete.

I don't think it looks like a 'steal to order.' I'd be far more inclined to suspect an opportunist theft inspired by public visits. I doubt that a fellow astronomer would steal very personal and specific instruments, some of which are about as unsaleable as it gets. If you want to get caught, steal a unique instrument. They did, and let us hope that they do.

I'm inclined to agree with Olly.

The EQ6's are a generic mount that you could easily sell in 6 months time.

The two sets of Bino's are going to be difficult if not impossible to sell.
