Right dioptre?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I took so long thinking about which bin to buy, went safe with Strathspey 10x50 waterproof, got them for £50 'as new, you wont be disappointed' on Ebay from a high scoring vendor and now I realise that I can't get the right eye properly focussed(?). I've tried it with and without my glasses (Bi-focals.). The left eye focusses nicely. If I have to start wearing an eye patch, this is going to be embarrassing!

Please advise.

Regards,

Bill.

Hummm, those bins have no central focus mechanism, don't they, each side focuses independantly? If so, you cannot focus the right tube? (Is it the same over a wide range of distances?) Have you tried left eye looking through the right tube (sorry if that sounds a bit stupid!) Not sure that it's a diapore problem, sounds more fundamental than that to me. If so the ebay seller must have known, very naughty if they were advertised as 'working'.

Hopefully someone like tetenterre can give you some advise, he is very knowledgeable.

That is the best bet, it's more or less his "specialist subject" given the maker and the model and all.

I'm fairly sure it can be fixed unless something really dire has transpired (lord knows what it would be though), which does not sound overly likely. These are much touted as high quality, and having errors adjusted away is something high quality optics ought to be capable of.

Sorry to learn of this Aaron, I'm certain something should be doable.

OK, it may sound like a daft question, but how is the good side doing?:D

Looks scary, but what have you got to lose? :D

A rather radical solution in the first instance?

I'd try contacting the vendor first to see if you can return and either replace or refund.

Opening up the binocular should be something considered as a last resort.

Just my 2p worth.

Thanks for all your comments. I think I'll contact the vendor after I'll give them one more chance, tonight might be clear, just in case it's my inexperience but it's good to know something can be done. (Ian.) the left side is fine although Jupiter's moons were not particularly viewable to me last night.

Regards,

Bill.

Hi Stu,

I'll try that tonight. They are central focussing.

Thanks,

Bill.

Ok, in that case it maybe the diapore adjustment. I'd try out focusing on things at different distances during daylight as well...... we may not get another cloud free night for a month :hello2:.

Hope you get it sorted out ok. If you do end up backing them, consider the Olympus 10x50 DSP I, £45.99 @Amazon, which is a few quid cheaper than when I bought mine from them a month or so ago :)

Aaron, I'm really sorry, I seem to have misread what model you bought. I'd not rush to try and fix anything wrong with that model. You would normally focus the left eye with the big focus wheel in the middle, and THEN adjust the right eyepiece ring to suit any imbalance/difference in your right eye, and from the couple of not very clear photos on their web site that is probably done using the ring next to the eyepiece bridge on the right hand eyepiece only.

I'm really sorry for the misunderstanding, but I'm not closely familiar with the entire Strathspey range unlike some, and I had got it into my head that you'd bought the Marine, as that's what I'd call playing it safe with Strathspey. This is because the Marine model has independent focus for each eye, and a tweak to that should be far less involved and scary even if it was out of whack, which by repute is not very likely with that model. I had not realised they did an additional waterproof model that was not actually the Marine.

I'm really sorry about that mistake on my part.:)

Hi Ian,

Don't worry. I didn't go for the marine model as I thought the independent focussing would be problematic when I use them during the day. Maybe not.

Cheers for your comments.

Bill.
