what colour should m42 be?

keep getting red and blue, but more blues than anything. but what colour should it be?

that is pretty much the right colour. It is quite blue, because its very hot.

The core, Trapezium area is burned out , but that is preventable by process techniques, which experts can enlighten you on.

Red is mostly the HII regions of a nebula, the star forming regions. Blue is reflection nebula, illuminated by nearby stars.

The Pleiades being a good example of reflection nebula.

You're about right there. Your background sky is very red and maybe dropping the blue in the nebula might help. But you're not far off. Nice one.

To get the Trapezium you need a set of shorter subs layer masked in.

Colors are pretty dead on. Only off a little bit due to processing which you can fix easily. Also suggest taking some shorter subs to help with the core not being blown out. You can fix that in PS but it will be better in the end if you have some short subs to aid you with the processing. Great job though!

getting rid of the grainy red in the sky will make that captured image pop. if you have photoshop there are plenty of tutorials on youtube how to adjust this.
