My Humble attempt at M81-82

So the technical description is the same as the one Olly posted, without the Ha ... that is del maybe for never ...

I did combining of mosaic in PI, rgb combine also but L + RGB and detail enhancements still in PS. I still get mixed results in PI on that front.

So here it becomes apparent that the same data can lead to different results ... I prefers Olly for the moment, but who knows V2 can be better.

I like iit a lot, Yves, and particularly M81. Very smooth and very natural. I think that somewhere along the line in the processing the core of M82 got too bright. I layered in s softer stretch for the core quite early. I think this is why you aren't getting the Ha to contributle. On the other hand you have some Ha showing from your red channel. I never saw that in mine. All very interesting.

And yours is the right way up!!!

All, thanks for the positive feedback.

The Ha never made it because I tried to blend it in like I do with NB images and that seems completely wrong.

In the mean time I looked at the way one can combine Ha in PI, it really means a reprocess and I really should start from zero again. The problem is that this one is an ok version, should it have been a disaster I would have redone it already.

Next version I'll try to bring out more of the fine detail to, it's there as can be seen in Olly's version.

Hi Bill,

this is an ODK 14 inch on mesu 2 mount with a starlight H36 camera, this would not be possible under my light polluted sky, so it's stationed at the astro B&B of Olly Penrice in the south of france.

"And yours is the right way up!!!"

As compared to WHAT, Olly ? I have to smile. Haven't we been taught since grade school that in space, there IS no left or right, up or down ? !

Jim S.

Well, to be more accurate, I absently mindedly presented my version flipped so you could perhaps call it 'inside out!!'

I followed the instructions of Harry for combining Ha and it works very well unfortunately we only have one hour on the m81 panel, and this results in different background levels that are not correctable with gradient merge ...

I don't need the background ... so any PI specialist who knows how to adjust a formula so you only take the brighter levels ...

Here just a quick process, just show what I mean ...

This is where Photoshop comes to the rescue... You can stretch up and noise reduce the short side till it matches. That worked fine for me. I can always get more Ha for the other side now the moon is coming back if you like. However, I don't think the PI Ha method beats using Blend Mode Lighten onto the red channel in Ps. I know I'm gonna cop it from Harry now. Uh oh!!!! But the thing is, I always want to process the Ha differently, going for sharpness and very high contrast. I don't want it 'in the mix' from the start.
