Astro shed questions

I have my 10' x 8' shed up and have got some 25mm polystyene insulation boards. Thing is, they are huge (2400 x 600) and I obviously will have to cut to size. I am not an overly experienced DIY'er but keen and learning all the time... I got a couple questions I hope you lovely people could answer me....

-What's the best method / tools to use for cutting 25mm thick polystyene ?

-Is it a good idea to insulate the shed roof ?

-I know that insulation is primarily for keeping out the cold in the winter but does it help or hinder the high summer temps ?

-How do I go about installing a grille/air vent for the shed (Keeping in mind I want to keep creepy crawlies to a minimum :)) ? (Bit of an open question I know.. any contributions most welcome.

Sorry for all the Q's

Hi Matt

I'd go with the stanley knife, don't start sawing or you'll think Christmas has come. You'll have static polystyrene balls everywhere.

I'm not going to insulate my obsy, I figure the more air flow the better. You don't want to end up trapping any moisture. Years ago I did the styrene thing and put hard board over the top, which was fine till the roof leaked. By the time I realised this and striped the hardboard it was all a bit of a mess. Styrene on it's own should be ok though.

Where to put a vent? I suppose two will give a flow, If you have one low and one high up you create air circulation. One on it's own high up would allow warm air to escape and will draw air from somewhere.

One thing to consider is where your weather comes from, you don't want driving rain coming through it.

They are simple enough to fit and best to put somekind of sealant between the vent and shed, mastics are good on sheds as timber swells and shrinks to some degree.

cheers

Thanks for the advice all. Stanly knife is at the ready :). As for venting....[Edited] I've rigged up some spare 12v pc fans (120mm for exhaust in the apex and 2x60mm for intake at the bottom of the shed). Using a spare car battery, it works a treat. I now want to put a thermostat in to the works to make it 'cut in' at a certain temp. Does anyone know where I can get hold of one in the 12v variety that would work with these fans ?

Thanks KK

Something like this ?

One thing... if I use a thermostat designed for heating rather than cooling (I'm presuming a house thermostat will be designed for heating systems) and I want it to turn power on when temps reach say 30 Deg, wont it do the reverse and stay on then 'cut off' at 30 deg ?

Usually thermostats have a changeover configuration and can be used for heating (central heating etc.) or cooling (air Con. etc.) so you should be fine. Just check the operation by winding the knob up and down to see what it does. If it turns the fans on when the temperature setting is low, but off with it high, then you have it working OK.
