This is on Saturday 21st Jan, when we will have upwards of 20 scopes there for the general public, from 6.30pm till late. Supported also by Crawley AS. There will be displays, videos and hot drinks within the Visitor Centre.

Our other event is on Tuesday 17th, from 5 till 7.30pm and is organised by the National Trust at Clandon Park, West Clandon, nr Guildford. Surrey Uni's Surrey Space Centre will be mounting satellite-technology displays within the main building. We'll be joined on the night by Ewell AS and A4E.

I heard that the 21st at Newlands corner was cancelled for some reason?

Wow, what a night last night! The biggest ever outreach event that GAS have supported. The National Trust turnstiles registered 1,252 people going through! They even had to turn cars away! The weather wan't too good, but we did get a great clear spell followed by the occasional brief clear patch and the 25 scopes were kept very, very busy. Thankfully there was plenty to do indoors during those cloudy parts of the evening.

Many of those attending said they'd also be coming to our Newlands Corner event on Saturday 21st (repeat, NOT cancelled, despite spurious rumours -see above) so another busy night for GAS.

I went along to Clandon with the girlfriend and her 3 yr old who got her first look at Jupiter through one of the fracs on the front lawn, she's already mad on 'space' and knew some of the planets but her face was just pure delight after being shown Jupiter in the sky as a 'bright star' then to see through the eyepiece it was actually a planet with 'red dot' moons. We even got a rendition of 'Twinkle, twinkle, little star' from her which I joined in with much to her mum's amusement lol.

It was very popular so full credit to the NT, Guildford AS and A4E for what was obviously an extremely well organised event. The kids room in the hall was just spot on with all the colouring in stuff, solar system stickers, sparkly stuff, and model rocket building. The 'Trainee Stargazer' sticker is being proudly worn, along with the cloured in space shuttle travelling through all the planets picture displayed on the fridge.

Congratulations and many thanks from the 3 of us, especially the little one who before kept asking to see my scope but is now demanding her next observing session!

PS. what was the size of that dob in the corner? it was huge!
