First ever Pic

Recommended Posts

I'm really proud, I've got a long way to go but I was really pleased with this in the end.

It was using a point and shoot camera with a kit to fit it to an eyepiece, I did a 1 min movie (No tracking motors yet) and stacked in Keiths, tweaked in pixlemator.

I think I've got a lot of reading ahead of me to make the next step up in quality though!

This is going to be addictive I think :D

Fantastic first pic, just out of interest what set up did you use ?

I used my SW 200P - EQ5 and my panasonic lumix LX5 (which is a pretty good point and shoot). I fixed the two together with this kit I got off ebay:

LX5 kit

The hardest part is focussing, I set the cameras manual focus to 1m then used my focuser looking at the cameras screen (not good for your night vision!) and every few seconds adjusting the RA to keep it in the frame. My motors are on order so I'm hoping that will make it easier.

I spent quite some time adjusting the movie settings on the camera until I got something that looked ok on the screen, then pressed go, being very still and adjusting the RA manually when Jupiter was getting close to the edge.

I used a 2x Barlow and am hoping to get a TAL x3 Barlow, whenever anyone in the UK gets stock :D

Any advice would be greatly received :)

very nice first go. few tips: try to make bahtinov mask from a cardboard this will help you with the focus issue. try to shoot so that the planet looks a bit dim in the camera screen it will bring out more details (sounds crazy but true).

last tip - be advised this is very addictive and results in spending hours and lots of money - but hey at least it doesn't kill you :-)

That's a fantastic image of Jupiter for a first attempt held a-focally! Well done.

Thanks everyone, my 2nd attempt was definitely a step backwards! Viewing conditions weren't quite as good though, my bahtinov mask is on order.
