Most of you have probably already seen this, it was yesterday's APOD.

...but just in case, I had to post it because it's one of the most awe-inspiring DSO images I've ever seen! I love the way it even seemingly has a shadow. I keep expecting to spot a Care Bear

It is very beautiful and the bit at the bottom looks like the place where the water collects.

One thing I'd like to understand more is the colours used on the image. Are these a true representation of what it would look like if you were close up to it - sitting in your space capsule or are they an "interpretation" of what it would look like?

Tom,

This will be a false colour image, produced by combining data captured through different narrow-band filters. I can't seem to find any details on the specific palette used...

Being an emission nebula, the true colour is generally red, albeit too feint probably to see easily with the naked eye (at least with this level of detail) even close up in your space capsule!

Beautiful. I also have never heard of it nor seen it before. To be honest if looks more like a baby elephants head (trunk,eye and ear) to me.
